Alternative and Traditional Medicine
Alternative and Traditional Medicine 20 years ago when I began in the healing arts there was very little ill will between alternative healers and traditional Doctors. They simple went their own way and ignored each other. With the advent and explosion of the information age neither side could any longer pretend the other didn’t exist. There was quite a period of time where the war waged between the two until something phenomenal happened. People as clients and patients began demanding that they be allowed to heal their life the way they felt was best for them. All the internet information began to empower people to ask questions, look at alternatives and decide for themselves what course of action they would take. People showed up for their Doctors appointments armed with information on drugs and herbs and research they themselves had done on the internet. Patients became informed consumers. The information began to level the playing field a little bit. Patients didn’t care who got them well or made them feel better. They just wanted to be better. It opened the door for practitioners on both sides of the health care system to realize that good is found in each camp. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, used massage as his main modality. He knew that the human touch went a long way towards healing the body, mind and soul. A good Doctor, who doesn’t have time to massage his clients, but acknowledges its value, refers the client to someone in the healing arts. A good Massage Therapist who has a client with problems beyond their scope of practice refers them to a competent Doctor. As humans go, one can find incompetence in many health care offices. That is just the nature of the beast. One need not negate the whole profession on either side or make negative blanket statements. It is still patient beware. In several states we now find clinics that house Alternative and Traditional Medicine all working together. The only goal is to get the patient well. That is the power of people demanding the best for themselves and taking their power back by being responsible for their own path to healing. Consumers are powerful. Perhaps a little bit of knowledge is considered dangerous. It isn’t so much about telling your health care professional what to do as it is about being a part of designing the best plan and being given a voice. Always ask questions. Ask about choices. Get second opinions. Make sure you are heard. If a Doctor/Healer refuses to work with you or consider your feelings, go find someone who is willing. Just know that as the Alternative and Medical worlds find more respect for each other, we all win. |
